May 2022
Meet Professor Andrew Thompson, Professor of Clinical Psychology (Hons.) and Programme Director (DClinPsy), Cardiff University in Wales, UK.
Dr. Thompson originally presented his oral abstract, “The Association Between Mental Health Conditions and Vitiligo: A Population-Based Cohort Study in the UK” at the Vitiligo International Symposium in 2021.
This work represents the first large population-based study examining the association between mental health conditions and vitiligo. An important aim of his work was to establish the prevalence of anxiety and depression at vitiligo diagnosis and to explore how these conditions vary by socio-demographic factors and ethnicity.
Among the key conclusions of the study:
- There is a significant burden of anxiety and depression in adults with vitiligo at diagnosis.
- Understanding the disease burden and how it varies in people diagnosed at different ages, and ethnicities is crucial, so that healthcare professionals can offer necessary psychological support.
- More research is needed.
Watch his informative talk, originally presented at the Vitiligo International Symposium 2021.
