Meet Sharolyn Hagen, Minnesota VitFriends Community Member!
Sharolyn is a professional photographer and member of the Minnesota VitFriends community. She was diagnosed in 2016, when she was in her mid-30’s, by a dermatologist at the University of Minnesota.
As a photographer, she was naturally very interested in documenting how her skin would be changing. She also found artistic inspiration in the use of a UV light (Woods Lamp) like the one her dermatologist uses in skin exams. So every year around World Vitiligo Day, she has been taking black light photos of herself.
When she got involved in VitFriends, she and Alicia Roufs, (MN VitFriends Founder and Leader) got to talking about how great it would be to do these black light photos for more people, to help empower others to feel beautiful in their own skin, and see the beauty in the unusual, as a work of art.
This sparked the idea behind her recent installation, I CAN TELL, which features several VitFriends members. This series of stunning black light portraits was recently shared with the public in an installation in Edina, Minnesota, presented by Minnesota VitFriends.
We’re delighted that Sharolyn will be photographing the upcoming World Vitiligo Day-USA conference!
